            • World Tourism Day attended by Year 10 students

            • St. Francis High School extends heartfelt gratitude to our two student representatives, Tabeibeiti Keebwa and Elesi Mikare, both from Form 4C, who participated in the World Tourism Day Poetry Contest held on Thursday, 25th September at the Linnix Boardroom.
Despite the short notice, these brave young women stepped forward with enthusiasm and worked closely with their teacher to prepare. They joined contestants from LPSSS and JSS, and although they did not place in the top two positions, they embraced the challenge with courage and grace — stepping into an unfamiliar role without hesitation.
Each student received $30.00 in recognition of their participation.
On Saturday evening, they were invited as guests to a formal gathering where the Honorable Mikarite Temari served as guest of honor. The event featured presentations on community-based tourism practices in Kiribati and highlighted various initiatives led by the Tourism Unit.
St. Francis has requested copies of these presentations, as they hold valuable insights for both students and staff.
Once again, we thank Tabeibeiti and Elesi for proudly representing our school. Their yellow attire stood out as a symbol of school spirit and youthful optimism.

Special thanks to Ms. Maere Tekanene for preparing and supporting our students throughout this experience. Her dedication helped make their participation possible and meaningful.

            • English IA (Form 6 Skits) - Maere Tekanene Journal

            • " Last Wednesday 17th September 2025, Form 6 students performed a skit in their assigned groups. Each group had a team leader who guided the preparation from start to finish.  All skits were based on their covered literature work which involved Remember the Titans directed by Boaz Yakin and the two short stories The Doll’s House by Katherine Mansfield and The Necklace by Guy De Mauppasant. The skits focused on the main elements of the film and the short stories such as the main parts of the plot which included the climax and the conflict, the messages and others.

The highlight of this short skit which last less than 10 minutes for most were the creativity presented by some groups. These included opening songs which helped the participants obtain a relaxed feeling prior to proper presenting of their roles.  Though short, these short skits have provided an opportunity to work together as a team, using technological devices such as recorded applicable sounds from the media and blue tooth to provide the tone of the story required. In another group, they composed a simple and short song in English for their message. In order to assist those with poor recall of English characters’ names, the whole exercise was in some way serving their needs as they used cards to present each acting role names.

As their teacher, I am more than grateful for their tireless efforts as they covered the last leg of their IA. I noticed at the start that sometimes working in groups and being a team leader is not easy but eventually they all have managed to guide to their very best.  My best wishes to you all our finalists as you prepare before the final KSSC soon to happen."

Thanks very much Maere for putting this together. Chhh

            • Blessed Moment! Again, for the New Truck

            • Today’s Mass celebration was marked by a joyful and meaningful milestone for our school community—the blessing of our newly acquired truck with holy water. This sacred ritual, led with reverence and gratitude, symbolizes our prayer for protection, good fortune, and purposeful service as the vehicle begins its journey in support of our students, staff, and daily operations.

We were deeply honored to welcome a special guest to this occasion: the Parish Chairman from Teraina Parish, whose generous support and leadership were instrumental in the fundraising efforts that made this truck a reality. His presence reminded us of the power of unity and shared vision across our parishes.

This moment is not just about a vehicle—it’s about progress, collaboration, and the spirit of giving. We extend heartfelt thanks to all who contributed, especially our hardworking students and dedicated staff. Your commitment and enthusiasm have carried us to this proud achievement.
Hooray for this blessed step forward! May our new truck serve with strength, safety, and grace.

Though his visit was brief, his act of kindness was truly great and will be remembered by our school community for years to come.

            • St. Francis High School Joins Island-Wide Clean-Up Campaign

            • Friday 19th Sept, early in the morning before period 2 start, our students and staff proudly took part in a community cleaning campaign, organized by the Ministry of Line and Phoenix Island Development. With great energy and teamwork, our school family collected inorganic rubbish, packing it into green bags for proper disposal.

This initiative was more than just cleaning — it was about showing our love for our island, protecting our environment, and setting an example of responsibility and care for future generations.

A huge thank you to all our students and staff who volunteered their time and effort. Your dedication proves that together, we can keep our island clean, beautiful, and a true paradise to live in.

Special thanks to Teingoa Iotebwa for capturing these wonderful photos of our students and staff in action.

            • Pastoral Care Service "Baptismal Rite"

            • On Friday, during Periods 4 and 5, the St Francis High School community came together for a special school Mass, celebrated by Fr Mataio. This Eucharistic celebration was a moment of unity, reverence, and spiritual reflection for both students and staff.
What made this Mass especially memorable was the inclusion of baptismal rites for four children connected to our school staff: Kamatua, Temea, Moanteuea (child of Alice), and the infant daughter of Baaka. Their baptism, held within the context of our school Mass, brought a deep sense of joy and blessing to the entire community.
In the Catholic tradition, baptism is a sacred act of initiation—a symbol of new life and belonging within the Church. Witnessing these baptisms during our school Mass was a powerful reminder of the faith and family spirit that enriches our school life.
We extend heartfelt thanks to Fr Mataio for leading this celebration and to the families who shared this special moment with us. It was a day of grace, connection, and celebration—one that will be remembered with warmth and gratitude.

            • St Francis High School was honoured to welcome the EduKaIT Kiribati Team, working in partnership with CEDAK, and supported by the Ministry of Education and the Australian Government. Their visit brought joy, hope, and renewed connection to our school community.
Among the visiting team was Fr Mataio, Director of Catholic Education and also the Director for our Catholic schools. His presence made this occasion truly special, as it marked the first time our school had the opportunity to speak directly with a Director—sharing our experiences, challenges, and dreams for the future.
The visit brought life and encouragement, especially to mission schools in Phoenix and Christmas Islands, as the team came not only to observe but to listen. They asked what we need, and they promised to take those concerns back with them as they plan future support—including essential school stationery and resources.
One of the most exciting announcements was the confirmation of Form 7 for St Francis High School, expected to be established in 2025. This marks a major milestone in our school’s development and opens new academic pathways for our students.
To celebrate this meaningful occasion, the school hosted a warm and joyful gathering, filled with smiles, stories, and the spirit of togetherness that defines our school life.

            • Kiribati Study Subject Pre-Project by Form 4A.

            •

As part of their pre-project activities, the Form 4A students at St. Francis High School are learning hands-on local skills that every household or village in Kiribati should know. These traditional skills not only preserve cultural heritage but also provide practical knowledge for real-life situations.

One example is “Te Oi”, a traditional homemade torch made entirely from coconut leaves. In the past, it was commonly used for lighting, but today it can serve many purposes, such as:

              • Organic gardening and planting

              • Building simple local security fences

              • Lighting fires for cooking or preparing pork (e.g., removing skin)

              • Decorative arrangements

Another traditional item is “Te Kaue” (also known as “Te Bau”), which is crafted from multiple flowers tied together with coconut leaves. Although it lasts only one day, it is widely used for decoration and cultural purposes.

Practically, many girls and women in society today no longer know how to make Te Bau or Te Kaue. This highlights the importance of passing on these skills to younger generations through school-based projects.

Both Te Oi and Te Kaue are part of the Kiribati Studies minor class project and extracurricular activities. By completing these tasks, students gain valuable skills that connect classroom learning with real-life experiences, helping them appreciate the importance of tradition in modern life.
