            • Technical Vocational Education Training Achievement

            • A Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) workshop was recently conducted by the Kiribati Institute of Technology on Kiritimati Island. We are proud to share that five of our dedicated teachers—Sr Lucy, Atarake, Moanibou, Tabunga, and Kaburoro—took part in this valuable program and successfully graduated with a Certificate in Basic Competency.
This module forms part of an Introductory Professional Development initiative, designed to strengthen foundational skills and promote lifelong learning among educators. Their achievement reflects a strong commitment to growth and a shared vision of equipping our students with practical, skills-based education. We celebrate their success and thank them for representing our school with pride and purpose.

            • Australian Scholarship Award Awareness Programme

            • Form 5 and Form 6 students of St. Francis High School were recently given a valuable opportunity to engage with the Australian Scholarship Award Awareness Programme, marking a significant step in their journey toward further education.
The session was led by Ms. Nicola Roth, Second Secretary – Development, and Mr. Timaio Nauto, Assistant Program Manager – Employment & Labour Mobility. Their presentations offered rich insights into scholarship pathways, eligibility, and the broader vision of educational support available to Kiribati students.
Our senior students participated actively in this informative and empowering session, gaining clarity and motivation to pursue future academic opportunities. The atmosphere was one of curiosity, hope, and thoughtful engagement.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the visiting team and all those involved in organizing this initiative. Your efforts are helping to shape brighter futures for our young people—kam raba for your support and inspiration.

            • School Feast Day @ 2025

            • St. Francis High School joyfully celebrated the Feast Day of its patron, St. Francis of Assisi, with a rich and meaningful program that blended storytelling, worship, community spirit, and cheerful competition—all held inside the school’s maneaba.
The celebration began with a reflective sharing of the life story of St. Francis of Assisi. Through vivid storytelling, students and staff were invited to journey through his early years of wealth and privilege, his radical choice to embrace poverty, and his deep love for all of God’s creation. The presentation highlighted his humility, compassion, and unwavering faith, setting a reverent and inspiring tone for the day.
This was followed by a solemn Eucharistic Celebration, joined by special guests including the school principal, our beloved sisters, and the Active Head Catechist, who also serves as the school Chaplain. Their presence added grace and warmth to the occasion, reinforcing the spiritual heart of the event.
After the liturgy, the community gathered for a joyful cake-cutting ceremony and a shared meal, filling the maneaba with laughter, conversation, and the spirit of togetherness.
To close the day, students participated in a series of indoor games played inside the maneaba, featuring a friendly match between Team St. Paul and Team St. Peter. The games sparked excitement and camaraderie, showcasing teamwork, sportsmanship, and school pride.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make this day memorable. Kam raba, and Happy Feast Day to all!

            • World Tourism Day attended by Year 10 students

            • St. Francis High School extends heartfelt gratitude to our two student representatives, Tabeibeiti Keebwa and Elesi Mikare, both from Form 4C, who participated in the World Tourism Day Poetry Contest held on Thursday, 25th September at the Linnix Boardroom.
Despite the short notice, these brave young women stepped forward with enthusiasm and worked closely with their teacher to prepare. They joined contestants from LPSSS and JSS, and although they did not place in the top two positions, they embraced the challenge with courage and grace — stepping into an unfamiliar role without hesitation.
Each student received $30.00 in recognition of their participation.
On Saturday evening, they were invited as guests to a formal gathering where the Honorable Mikarite Temari served as guest of honor. The event featured presentations on community-based tourism practices in Kiribati and highlighted various initiatives led by the Tourism Unit.
St. Francis has requested copies of these presentations, as they hold valuable insights for both students and staff.
Once again, we thank Tabeibeiti and Elesi for proudly representing our school. Their yellow attire stood out as a symbol of school spirit and youthful optimism.

Special thanks to Ms. Maere Tekanene for preparing and supporting our students throughout this experience. Her dedication helped make their participation possible and meaningful.

            • English IA (Form 6 Skits) - Maere Tekanene Journal

            • " Last Wednesday 17th September 2025, Form 6 students performed a skit in their assigned groups. Each group had a team leader who guided the preparation from start to finish.  All skits were based on their covered literature work which involved Remember the Titans directed by Boaz Yakin and the two short stories The Doll’s House by Katherine Mansfield and The Necklace by Guy De Mauppasant. The skits focused on the main elements of the film and the short stories such as the main parts of the plot which included the climax and the conflict, the messages and others.

The highlight of this short skit which last less than 10 minutes for most were the creativity presented by some groups. These included opening songs which helped the participants obtain a relaxed feeling prior to proper presenting of their roles.  Though short, these short skits have provided an opportunity to work together as a team, using technological devices such as recorded applicable sounds from the media and blue tooth to provide the tone of the story required. In another group, they composed a simple and short song in English for their message. In order to assist those with poor recall of English characters’ names, the whole exercise was in some way serving their needs as they used cards to present each acting role names.

As their teacher, I am more than grateful for their tireless efforts as they covered the last leg of their IA. I noticed at the start that sometimes working in groups and being a team leader is not easy but eventually they all have managed to guide to their very best.  My best wishes to you all our finalists as you prepare before the final KSSC soon to happen."

Thanks very much Maere for putting this together. Chhh

            • Blessed Moment! Again, for the New Truck

            • Today’s Mass celebration was marked by a joyful and meaningful milestone for our school community—the blessing of our newly acquired truck with holy water. This sacred ritual, led with reverence and gratitude, symbolizes our prayer for protection, good fortune, and purposeful service as the vehicle begins its journey in support of our students, staff, and daily operations.

We were deeply honored to welcome a special guest to this occasion: the Parish Chairman from Teraina Parish, whose generous support and leadership were instrumental in the fundraising efforts that made this truck a reality. His presence reminded us of the power of unity and shared vision across our parishes.

This moment is not just about a vehicle—it’s about progress, collaboration, and the spirit of giving. We extend heartfelt thanks to all who contributed, especially our hardworking students and dedicated staff. Your commitment and enthusiasm have carried us to this proud achievement.
Hooray for this blessed step forward! May our new truck serve with strength, safety, and grace.

            • Form 6 Biology Students With their creativity showcase 2025

            • Our Form 6 Biology students recently showcased their human system models, demonstrating incredible creativity, effort, and understanding of the human body organ system.

From preparation to presentation, students engaged in hands-on activities that made learning both fun and meaningful. Their dedication and innovative ideas truly impressed teachers and peers alike.

We are truly thankful for their hard work and proud of the enthusiasm they brought to this learning experience. This is a shining example of learning by doing at St. Francis High School!

Kam bati n rabwa & well done, Form 6 Biology students.

            • A Very Generous and Kind Act

            • Today, our school was blessed with an unexpected visit from a very generous and kind tourist staying at Lagoon View Resort. In a short period of time, he surprised us by donating a few basketball jersey singlets, books, and pens. Though his visit was brief, his act of kindness was truly great and will be remembered by our school community for years to come.

            • St. Francis High School Joins Island-Wide Clean-Up Campaign

            • Friday 19th Sept, early in the morning before period 2 start, our students and staff proudly took part in a community cleaning campaign, organized by the Ministry of Line and Phoenix Island Development. With great energy and teamwork, our school family collected inorganic rubbish, packing it into green bags for proper disposal.

This initiative was more than just cleaning — it was about showing our love for our island, protecting our environment, and setting an example of responsibility and care for future generations.

A huge thank you to all our students and staff who volunteered their time and effort. Your dedication proves that together, we can keep our island clean, beautiful, and a true paradise to live in.

Special thanks to Teingoa Iotebwa for capturing these wonderful photos of our students and staff in action.

St. Francis High School – supporting a cleaner, greener community!

            • A New Truck for Our School

            • We are excited to share wonderful news with our school community — St. Francis High School now has a brand-new truck! This is not just any vehicle; it is a symbol of dedication, unity, and the power of hard work over the past two years.

Through countless fundraising efforts, activities, and the generous support of our wider community, we have finally achieved this milestone. The gift of hard work truly bears fruit, and this new truck will serve many of our needs — from student travel and school activities to urgent errands and other essential uses.

On behalf of the students, staff, and families of St. Francis High School, we echo our deepest gratitude to everyone who played a part in this achievement.

              • To our Parish, Mother Theresa, London Kiritimati

              • To the nearby parish communities in Teraina and Tabuaeran

              • To our dedicated parents, staff, and students of 2024–2025

Your kindness, sacrifice, and generosity made this possible. This truck stands as a reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together for a shared vision.

            • Parents & Teachers Report Day !

            • What a wonderful day at St. Francis!

On Friday, 5th September, we held our PTA Meeting and Term 3 Report Giving. It was inspiring to see so many parents and guardians come in to meet with teachers, talk about their children’s learning journey, and share ideas together.

We’re especially grateful because this year, more families joined us than in previous years - showing how much we all care about working together for our students’ success.

Thank you, parents and guardians, for your continued support - St. Francis is stronger because of you!

            • Pastoral Care Service "Baptismal Rite"

            • On Friday, during Periods 4 and 5, the St Francis High School community came together for a special school Mass, celebrated by Fr Mataio. This Eucharistic celebration was a moment of unity, reverence, and spiritual reflection for both students and staff.
What made this Mass especially memorable was the inclusion of baptismal rites for four children connected to our school staff: Kamatua, Temea, Moanteuea (child of Alice), and the infant daughter of Baaka. Their baptism, held within the context of our school Mass, brought a deep sense of joy and blessing to the entire community.
In the Catholic tradition, baptism is a sacred act of initiation—a symbol of new life and belonging within the Church. Witnessing these baptisms during our school Mass was a powerful reminder of the faith and family spirit that enriches our school life.
We extend heartfelt thanks to Fr Mataio for leading this celebration and to the families who shared this special moment with us. It was a day of grace, connection, and celebration—one that will be remembered with warmth and gratitude.

            • A Joyful Visit from EduKaIT, CEDAK,(Secondary Schools Directors)

            • St Francis High School was honoured to welcome the EduKaIT Kiribati Team, working in partnership with CEDAK, and supported by the Ministry of Education and the Australian Government. Their visit brought joy, hope, and renewed connection to our school community.
Among the visiting team was Fr Mataio, Director of Catholic Education and also the Director for our Catholic schools. His presence made this occasion truly special, as it marked the first time our school had the opportunity to speak directly with a Director—sharing our experiences, challenges, and dreams for the future.
The visit brought life and encouragement, especially to mission schools in Phoenix and Christmas Islands, as the team came not only to observe but to listen. They asked what we need, and they promised to take those concerns back with them as they plan future support—including essential school stationery and resources.
One of the most exciting announcements was the confirmation of Form 7 for St Francis High School, expected to be established in 2025. This marks a major milestone in our school’s development and opens new academic pathways for our students.
To celebrate this meaningful occasion, the school hosted a warm and joyful gathering, filled with smiles, stories, and the spirit of togetherness that defines our school life.
Kam rabwa EduKaIT Team, CEDAK, the Ministry of Education, and the Australian Government for walking alongside us. Your visit has left a lasting impact—and we look forward to the journey ahead.

            • Kiribati Study Subject Pre-Project by Form 4A.

            •

As part of their pre-project activities, the Form 4A students at St. Francis High School are learning hands-on local skills that every household or village in Kiribati should know. These traditional skills not only preserve cultural heritage but also provide practical knowledge for real-life situations.

One example is “Te Oi”, a traditional homemade torch made entirely from coconut leaves. In the past, it was commonly used for lighting, but today it can serve many purposes, such as:

              • Organic gardening and planting

              • Building simple local security fences

              • Lighting fires for cooking or preparing pork (e.g., removing skin)

              • Decorative arrangements

Another traditional item is “Te Kaue” (also known as “Te Bau”), which is crafted from multiple flowers tied together with coconut leaves. Although it lasts only one day, it is widely used for decoration and cultural purposes.

Practically, many girls and women in society today no longer know how to make Te Bau or Te Kaue. This highlights the importance of passing on these skills to younger generations through school-based projects.

Both Te Oi and Te Kaue are part of the Kiribati Studies minor class project and extracurricular activities. By completing these tasks, students gain valuable skills that connect classroom learning with real-life experiences, helping them appreciate the importance of tradition in modern life.

            • We proudly recognize Mr. Teakin, a talented and committed staff member, who is working diligently to install a new sink and water basin for the Science Laboratory. His contribution is a key part of our school’s efforts as the Ministry of Education team continues their observation—aiming for St. Francis High School to be approved to offer Form 7 in the near future.

This important project would not be possible without the leadership of our Principal, the tireless support of the Science Department, and the helping hands of several staff members. We are also truly grateful to those from outside our school community who stepped in to assist. Your dedication reflects the spirit of teamwork and generosity that defines our school.

            • St. Francis High School joyfully shares the exciting news of a special project underway—a new residence for the school chaplain, generously funded and built by members of the Parish, including devoted catechists. This initiative reflects the deep spirit of service and unity within our faith community.

The school extends heartfelt gratitude to the Parish for launching and supporting this meaningful endeavor. Although the construction is still in progress, the new building is nearing completion and already stands as a symbol of hope and progress.

This project has not only lightened the school’s financial responsibilities but has also brought comfort and encouragement to staff members living in modest homes within the compound. It offers them a glimpse of improved living conditions and renewed optimism.

As we look forward to the chaplain’s home nearing completion, we’re also excited about new staff houses being built on the other side of the compound—another Parish-led effort through Te Itoiningaia. These projects continue to strengthen the special bond between the Parish and our school.

To allow comfort with space and privacy, all classes are using their homerooms for their exam from today until next Thursday 15th August when exams are to end. During the break, everybody is encouraged to wait within the school compound but far from the classrooms. Many students are waiting in the Mwaneaba and under the shade of te Kanawa/ te Bero trees before their afternoon papers commence. The weather today is at 32 degrees Celsius. 4/6/2024

              PTA 2024 is Established

St Francis PTA for 2024 was finally established on 31st May after a meeting of staff and parents convened at the school hall. At the start of the PTA at 11 in the morning more than 20 parents were present. Representation is mostly by village inclusive of some church representatives given we have some students from other religions. The school is hopeful to achieve more improvement required at the school through this volunatary PTA. The principal, Adrian Merake, informed the parents that it will not keep them over occupied as it will meet twice a term. The next step is to convene a proper PTA with selected staff. Parents turnout was better than previous years as the school met the hire costs for two trucks, one from Banana and the other from Ronton to St Francis High School. Towards lunch hour the school received more than 60 parents and guardians. More details
