            • Kiribati Study Subject Pre-Project by Form 4A.

              As part of their pre-project activities, the Form 4A students at St. Francis High School are learning hands-on local skills that every household or village in Kiribati should know. These traditional skills not only preserve cultural heritage but also provide practical knowledge for real-life situations.

              One example is “Te Oi”, a traditional homemade torch made entirely from coconut leaves. In the past, it was commonly used for lighting, but today it can serve many purposes, such as:

              • Organic gardening and planting

              • Building simple local security fences

              • Lighting fires for cooking or preparing pork (e.g., removing skin)

              • Decorative arrangements

              Another traditional item is “Te Kaue” (also known as “Te Bau”), which is crafted from multiple flowers tied together with coconut leaves. Although it lasts only one day, it is widely used for decoration and cultural purposes.

               

              Practically, many girls and women in society today no longer know how to make Te Bau or Te Kaue. This highlights the importance of passing on these skills to younger generations through school-based projects.

              Both Te Oi and Te Kaue are part of the Kiribati Studies minor class project and extracurricular activities. By completing these tasks, students gain valuable skills that connect classroom learning with real-life experiences, helping them appreciate the importance of tradition in modern life.

            • We proudly recognize Mr. Teakin, a talented and committed staff member, who is working diligently to install a new sink and water basin for the Science Laboratory.             • A Gift of Faith and Hope: The Chaplain's Residence Nears Completion

            • St. Francis High School joyfully shares the exciting news of a special project underway—a new residence for the school chaplain, generously funded and built by members of the Parish, including devoted catechists. This initiative reflects the deep spirit of service and unity within our faith community.

              The school extends heartfelt gratitude to the Parish for launching and supporting this meaningful endeavor. Although the construction is still in progress, the new building is nearing completion and already stands as a symbol of hope and progress.

              This project has not only lightened the school’s financial responsibilities but has also brought comfort and encouragement to staff members living in modest homes within the compound. It offers them a glimpse of improved living conditions and renewed optimism.

              As we look forward to the chaplain’s home nearing completion, we’re also excited about new staff houses being built on the other side of the compound—another Parish-led effort through Te Itoiningaia. These projects continue to strengthen the special bond between the Parish and our school.

            • School Celebrates Fundraising Success as Form 4A Leads with Top Contribution

              The school community came together once more for a special evening to celebrate the closing of the recent Bazar fundraising events. While the night centered on tallying form contributions, it also served as a milestone moment: recognizing the school’s impressive fundraising journey across multiple campaigns.

              Form 4A stood out as the top achievers, raising $1,653.50 under the guidance of Mr. Kaburoro and Ms. Lafue—surpassing all other forms and earning well-deserved praise.

              On behalf of the School Board Directors, the Vice Chairlady expressed heartfelt thanks to the winners for their hard work and leadership, which helped propel the total Bazar fundraising to $7,725.30. Her gratitude extended to the entire staff and student body for their dedication and unity.

              In addition to this year’s Bazar, the school recognized income from previous fundraising efforts, including last year's campaign and generous support during the Teraina and Tabuaeran school visits. Coordinated under the guidance of the Parish, these combined initiatives have brought the total amount raised to 24,723.85.

              This milestone brings the school closer to achieving key goals—such as acquiring a much-needed vehicle and printer—investments that will enhance both learning and operations.

              Saint Francis High School was honored to play a vibrant role in welcoming Fr. Kanoua, Vicar General of the Diocese of Kiribati & Nauru, during his recent pastoral visit to Kiritimati Parish. As part of our ongoing school–parish outreach, this special occasion brought together students, staff, and the wider faith community in joyful celebration.

              One of the highlights of the visit was a traditional dance performance by our students, held during the parish’s official welcome and Sunday feast. With grace and energy, the students expressed their respect for the Church and their commitment to spiritual and cultural service.

              What followed was both humbling and unexpected—members of the wider parish, moved by the performance, began voluntarily placing donations into a nearby box in appreciation of the students’ efforts. By the end of the celebration, the amount collected totaled $887, a touching show of support that left both staff and students deeply honored.

              This heartfelt gesture serves as a reminder of the strong bond between Saint Francis and the Parish. Through events like this, our school continues to nurture faith, pride, and gratitude.

            • Saint Francis High School proudly hosted a key Kiritimati Interschool Committee meeting as preparations ramp up for the much-anticipated interschool sports competition. This important gathering brought together principals, deputy principals, and sports coaches from four participating schools:

              • Itoinimauku Senior Secondary School
              • Line and Phoenix Senior Secondary School
              • Saint Francis High School

              With teamwork at the core of the discussions, the committee focused on finalizing logistics, team readiness, and shared responsibilities to ensure a well-coordinated and spirited event.

              After the meeting, Saint Francis extended warm hospitality by providing refreshments and a hearty meal—a gesture of unity and appreciation to all who are working behind the scenes to make this event a success.

              In the weeks leading up to the big event, the squad has begun boarding full-time on campus to focus on training, team unity, and academic balance. Behind the scenes, our committed teachers and staff have stepped in to oversee daily routines, prepare meals, and ensure the athletes are supported physically, mentally, and spiritually.

              On the evening of Saturday, 17th May 2025 at 7:00 PM, the St. Francis High School community came together at the School Maneaba to celebrate and honour staff members whose exceptional teaching efforts led their students to achieve Grade 1 in the 2024 national examinations. This special event served as a heartfelt tribute to the dedication, skill, and impact of our educators.

              The celebration was graced by the presence of school leadership and esteemed guests, including Vice Chairlady Eriteti Mikaere, Director Tarataake Takentebwebwe, and Director Teikarawa Tekinene, who all turned up in full support to witness and recognize this proud moment.

              Date of Event: Friday, 16th May 2025     Location: Parish Headquarters, Ronton – St. Theresa Parish, Kiritimati

              We are pleased to share that the St. Francis High School Bazar, and Exhibition, held on Friday, 16th May 2025, was a resounding success. The event took place at the Parish Headquarters in Ronton and was organized as part of our ongoing fundraising efforts to support essential school needs, including the acquisition of a school vehicle and a printer.

              Each of our nine classrooms was tasked with raising AUD $500, and we are proud to report that the students rose to the occasion with energy, creativity, and teamwork. Various stalls were set up, offering delicious food, handmade goods, and a range of items prepared and managed by the students themselves.

              We were deeply honoured by the presence and support of Ministers and Catechists from all sectors of St. Theresa Parish. Their encouragement and participation helped make the event more meaningful and memorable. We also extend special thanks to the former parish members and those who once lived or worked in the Parish Hall, for returning and showing their continued support.

              Importantly, we wish to acknowledge the generous households of Ronton, Kiritimati, whose enthusiastic turnout and support through shopping and donations greatly contributed to the day’s success.

              This event would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our students, the unwavering support of their parents, and the commitment of our school staff and leadership. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who played a part in making the day successful.

              The vibrant spirit of teamwork and healthy competition filled the air today as St. Francis of Assisi High School hosted its much-anticipated Inter-Team Sports Day at the Mini Stadium in Ronton, Kiritimati. The event brought together students, teachers, community members, and special guests in a celebration of athleticism and unity.

              Two of the school’s finest teams, St. Paul (Red Team) and St. Peter (Blue Team), went head-to-head in a thrilling contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. After a series of intense and exciting games, the Red Team emerged victorious with a final score of 672 to 606, marking a proud moment for St. Paul supporters.

              The day began with a warm welcome and an opening prayer led by Fr. Tarajake, followed by inspiring remarks from our Guest of Honor, Hon. Minister Mikarite Temari. His presence and support underscored the importance of youth engagement in sports and community development.

              We were also honored by the attendance of several distinguished guests, including the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors, the Head Catechist, and various school stakeholders, whose encouragement added a sense of pride and formality to the occasion.

              The event featured competitive matches, friendly relays, and team-building activities that showcased the athletic talents and enthusiasm of our students. Cheers and laughter echoed throughout the stadium, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and joy.

              At St. Francis High School, the name we carry is more than just a title—it’s a calling. The name “Francis” has always reminded us of simplicity, compassion, peace, and care for the poor, just as Saint Francis of Assisi lived centuries ago. But in our own lifetime, we had the gift of witnessing someone who embodied that same spirit: Pope Francis.

              Today, as we reflect on his passing, we do so not only as members of the Catholic community but as students and staff of a school that shares his name—a name that Pope Francis honored with his life.

              When Jorge Mario Bergoglio became the first pope to ever choose the name “Francis,” it was a powerful message to the world. He chose the name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, signaling a papacy rooted in humility, mercy, and love for the most vulnerable. These are the very values we strive to live by here at St. Francis High School.

              Pope Francis showed us that greatness lies in simplicity. Whether he was riding in a small car, embracing the poor, or speaking out for the environment, his actions spoke louder than words. His life was a reflection of the Gospel—a reminder that faith must always be lived through love.

              At St. Francis High, we are proud to carry the name “Francis” not just as a legacy of the past, but as a living mission. In our classrooms, in our acts of service, in the way we treat one another—we are called to walk in the footsteps of both Saint Francis and Pope Francis.

              "Pope Francis made history in 2013 when he was elected the 266th pope of the Catholic Church. What made his election truly historic was that he became the first pope from the Americas—specifically from Argentina in South America.

              Before Pope Francis, all popes had come from Europe, mostly Italy. But the cardinals of the Church, gathered in a conclave at the Vatican, chose someone different. They saw in Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio a man of deep faith, humility, and a strong connection to the people—especially the poor.

            • As the students of St. Francis embark on their Term 1 examinations for the academic year 2025, the staff would like to take a moment to extend their warmest wishes and support to each and every one of them.

              This examination period is an important milestone in the academic journey, and the faculty acknowledges the hard work, discipline, and dedication that all students have shown in preparing for these assessments. The staff encourages students to stay calm, focused, and confident in their abilities, knowing that they are well-prepared to tackle the challenges ahead.

              “You have all put in the effort, and now it is time to trust in your knowledge,” said Principal Adrian. “Approach each question with confidence, and remember that you are capable of achieving great things.”

              These photos showcase our Form 4 TVET class during their Business Studies presentations, part of the new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curriculum.

              This engaging module had students carry out hands-on research by visiting various local entities—including stores, vendors, companies, clubs, and other businesses around Kiritimati Island. The information gathered during these visits formed the basis of their Internal Assessment presentations.

              We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the businesses and organizations who opened their doors to our students and supported their learning journey. Your contributions helped bring their studies to life and gave them a clearer understanding of how real businesses operate.

              These photos showcase our Form 4 TVET class during their Business Studies presentations, part of the new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curriculum.

              This engaging module had students carry out hands-on research by visiting various local entities—including stores, vendors, companies, clubs, and other businesses around Kiritimati Island. The information gathered during these visits formed the basis of their Internal Assessment presentations.

            • Fresh, Clean & Almost Open–New Toilets & Taps Ready for Std!

              Here’s a photo of the newly completed toilet block and handwashing station, built by this hardworking team of men and women. Huge thanks to these dedicated contractors for working alongside WASH to meet the needs of our students. This project was proudly funded by WASH.

              Although construction is complete, the toilets are not open for use yet. Keep an eye out for the official opening announcement
